Everywhere we go we always think of what we would say to our crazy K-9 friends. A few weeks ago I went to dinner at a local eatery in Greenville, SC. If you’re ever in town you should check out Woodside Bistro in the historic Woodside Mill for some fantastic, chef-kiss good food. On this evening it was the perfectly seared scallops.
Being a pet-friendly spot, we often observe wandering dogs, but one evening a particularly charming pup caught our attention. Like a perfectly trained service animal she led her owner in, sat at the bar, and waited for her water bowl. It was amusing to watch everyone’s smiles as they noticed her. And then it happened…
She looked directly at me, smiled her gushing smile and I think, even winked at me. I didn’t know how to feel. Do I wink back? Do I make eye contact? Should I smile?
I was lost in a Kenny Chesney song, walking through Unity Park, sharing my McDonald’s bag fries, and hanging out at Camperdown Square. I snapped back to reality when the server tapped my arm and brought me the check after calling my name three times.
It was an emotionally awkward moment. As any new-age human would do I reached for my phone and snapped a pic of that glorious smile to document the moment, with all intentions of processing my emotions later. Needless to say we will be checking back in at Woodside. In the meantime, if anyone knows her we would love permission to visit with a service animal, snap a few more pics and say thanks for the inspiration for a letter in our new book!
Speaking of the book… you can find a copy here, and if you’re a big Amazon person you can find it here.

Absolutely love this encounter! Made me laugh out loud. Just goes to show the “soul connection” we have with our furry friends. They seem to understand the human spirit, whether we are happy or sad. The saying goes that dogs are a good judge of character. You may have an “admirer” for life 💞
